Everything People Ask Before They Book

Honest answers to the things worth knowing before you commit to solar — including the parts other installers gloss over.

Service Area & Accreditation

Do you install solar on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane?

Yes. We're based in Nerang on the Gold Coast and install across the Gold Coast, Brisbane and the surrounding areas of South East Queensland — including Nerang, Robina and Coomera. If you're not sure whether you're in range, call 0412 706 716 and Donna will tell you straight away.

Are you accredited to install solar?

Yes. Focus Solar & Electrical is fully SAA (Solar Accreditation Australia) accredited, and every installation crew is made up of licensed Queensland electricians.

Accreditation matters for two reasons: it's the national standard for installation quality, and the federal government requires an accredited installer for your system to qualify for STC rebates. If your installer isn't accredited, you lose the rebate entirely.

Systems & Batteries

What size solar system do I need?

It depends on how much power you use and how much usable roof you have. Two common residential sizes are a 6.6kW system (14 × 475W panels) and a 13.3kW system (28 × 475W panels). Larger systems suit households that use a lot of power during the day, are adding a battery, or are charging an electric car.

We size the system to your actual usage rather than selling you the biggest one that fits on the roof.

Can I add a battery to solar panels I already have?

Yes. We install batteries alongside a new solar system and we also retrofit batteries to existing systems. A battery lets you store the power your panels generate during the day and use it at night, instead of exporting it cheaply and buying it back at full price. Tell us what you already have installed and we'll quote the retrofit.

Will solar cover everything, or do I still need the grid?

Your home uses solar power first and draws from the grid only when your panels aren't producing enough — at night, or on a heavily overcast day. Adding a battery narrows that gap considerably, because the power your roof made during the day is still there in the evening.

Rebates & Cost

How much does a solar system cost?

Price depends on system size, your roof and switchboard, and whether you're adding a battery — so we quote each job individually. What we can tell you is that the federal STC rebate typically takes $2,000 to $5,000 or more off the price of a residential system, and it's already deducted on the quote we hand you. Quotes are free and there's no obligation.

Do I have to claim the rebate myself?

No. When you sign the contract you assign your Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) to us, and we apply the equivalent discount straight to your price. We handle the registration and submission with the Clean Energy Regulator — you never touch the paperwork and there's no rebate to chase afterwards.

Is there a rebate on home batteries?

Yes. Since July 2025 the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program has offered around a 30% discount on the cost of installing an eligible battery, applied through your installer at the time of purchase. Not every battery qualifies, so ask us to confirm which systems attract the discount when we quote. There's more detail on our solar rebates page.

Will the rebate be worth less if I wait?

Yes. The federal STC scheme is scheduled to phase out by 2030, and the number of certificates your system earns reduces each year. Waiting doesn't make the system cheaper — it makes the discount smaller.

The Install Process

What actually happens, start to finish?

Four stages: a free quote, installation day, grid connection, and switch-on. After the physical install your system has to be connected and approved by the network before it can start exporting — we handle that process and confirm the expected timeframes for your job when we quote.

What happens if something goes wrong afterwards?

You call us and someone answers. Being able to reach the people who did the work after the job is finished is one of the things customers mention most in our reviews, and it's deliberate — we're a local operation, not a national call centre.

Electrical, EV Chargers & Commercial

Do you install EV chargers?

Yes — EV charger installation is one of our four core services, alongside residential solar and batteries, commercial solar, and residential electrical work. Pairing a charger with solar means you're charging the car on power your own roof generated rather than buying it from the grid.

Do you do electrical work that has nothing to do with solar?

Yes. We're licensed Queensland electricians and take on general residential electrical work — switchboard upgrades, new circuits and wiring, safety inspections and fault-finding. You don't need to be a solar customer to book us.

Do you do commercial solar?

Yes. For commercial sites we run the numbers on your actual consumption before quoting, so the system is sized against your real load profile rather than a rule of thumb. Commercial installs include WiFi monitoring for every panel, which means underperformance shows up as a specific panel rather than a vague drop in output.

Dealing With Us

Who will I actually be dealing with?

Donna handles the enquiries and quotes — she's the person who answers the phone. Aaron founded the business, is the lead installer, and holds full SAA accreditation. As the business has grown he's built out installation crews who work to the same accreditation and licensing standard he set.

What warranty do you offer?

Focus Solar backs its own workmanship for seven years. The equipment carries the manufacturers' warranties on top of that — panels and batteries are warranted for different periods depending on the product, and the exact terms are set out on the datasheet for whatever we quote.

You get those datasheets with your quote, before you commit to anything.

Is a quote free?

Yes — free and no obligation. We'd rather talk you through your options honestly than pressure you into a system that doesn't suit your situation, and we're happy for you to compare us against other quotes.
